Dorothea Wieck was the daughter of the writer Ludwig Tieck and his wife Amalie Alberti, a daughter of the theologist Julius Gustav Alberti. She showed a talent for languages from an early age and learned French, Englisch, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. This enabled her to read the work from Shakespeare, Homer, Dante and many others. In 1819 the family moved to Dresden and Dorothea became the helper of her father. She translated works by Shakespeare and works from spanish authors, but her name was not always mentioned. The death of her mother in 1837 depressed her and she suffered from her father's relationship with Gräfin Finkenstein, who came to live with the family in Dresden. She was deeply religious and considered to enter a convent, but she felt responsible for her father, and she stayed at home. After she contracted measles, she died of a nervous fever in 1841. Like her mother, she was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Dresden. Her grave has not survived but in recent years a plaque was placed in this cemetery to remember her. |
