Christoph August was the son of a rector of a school in Gardelegen. He Studied law in Halle, but he abandoned his studies afther the death of his father. In 1778 he went to Halberstadt, where he worked for four years as the secretary of Domherr von Steder. After Steder's death he moved to Quedlinburg with Steder's family. Von Steder's wife died in 1797. In 1800 he became well known as a writer after he published his poem "Urania über Gott, Unsterblichkeit und Freiheit".

He lived in Halle and Berlin (1805-1808) and during his time in Berlin he travelled with his friend Elisa von der Recke in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. From 1819 he lived with Elisa in Dresden, where she died in 1833 and he in 1841. During his life he was a well read author, publishing prose as well as poetry.
