Annie Kalmar was acting in Vienna at the Volkstheater when she attracted the attention of Karl Kraus. He admired her and they met in 1900. Around that time she was seriously ill and he visited her at a sanatorium near Vienna.

After she recovered she was engaged by the Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg where she would star in Schiller's "Maria Stuart". Kraus had arranged this by speaking to the director of the theatre. Before the play could go on the stage she fell ill again and died in Hamburg.

Kraus suffered from her death and as late as 1924 he dedicated his "Traumtheater" ("Dream Theatre") to her. Because many had seen her only as a pretty woman, Kraus thought her death could have been caused by a lack of recognition for her talents.
