Arthur Llewelyn Davies was the second son of John Llewelyn Davies (1826-1916), the vicar of Kirkby Lonsdale and an alpinost. His siter Margaret Llewelyn Davies (1861-1944) was a suffragette. He studied at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge. For a while he was a master at Eton but soon he started practising law. In 1889 he met Sylvia du Maurier (1866-1910), the daughter of George du Maurier (1834-1896), at a diner party. They married in 18902 and had five sons, George (1893-1915), Jack (1894-1959), Peter (1897-1960), Michael (1900-1921) and Nicholas (1903-1980). George and Jack met J.M. Barrie at Kensington Gardens and befriended him. After Arthur an Sylvia met Barrie, Sylvia and Barrie became close friends as well. Arthur didn't care for Barrie but he didn't stand in their way and Barrie often visited the family. Several characters from Barrrie's novel "The Luttle White Bird" (1901) were inspired by the Davis family and the Davis children also inspired his play "Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up" (1904). In that heat Arthur Davies and his family moved from London to Berkhamstead, Hertfortshire. In 1906 a malignant tumor was discovered in his jaw. After two operations he was unable to speak but he still suffered from the cancer. Barrie paid for his medical care and often visited him. Davies died on 19 April 1907. He was buried in the churchyard extension of St John-at-Hampstead in London. Family Son: Llewelyn Davies, Peter Wife: Du Maurier, Sylvia (1892-1907) |
