Karoline von Schiller was eldest daughter of the poet Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) and his wife Charlotte von Lengefeld (1766-1826). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was her godfather. She was trained as an educator in Stuttgart. She worked for Duke Eugen of Württemberg (1788-1857) to raise his daughter Marie (1818-1888). She left the court after an affair with a colleague and moved to her mother's hometown Rudolstadt in Thüringen. She had inherited money from her father and in 1832 in Rudolstadt she started a teaching instution for middle-class girls for which she took over school equipment of a school. She named it the Schiller School in memory of her father and taught French herself. Karoline attended Friedrich Fröbel's Allgemeine deutsche Erziehungsanstalt in Rudolstadt from 1831 to 1835 and in 1840 she still corresponded with him. One of her pupils was Franziska Junot and on 26 Jun 1836 Franziska's widowed father, the widowed civil servant Franz Junot. He already had six children. In 1840 they moved to a house in Katzhütte. They had one child of their own, Karl Felix, who was born in Katzhütte in 1839. In 1842 the family moved to Rudolstadt. Felix died after his fifth birthday in 1844. After Franz Junot died as well in 1846, Karoline withdrew from public life. Her school still existed in 1850 when Karoline died during a visit to her sister in Würzburg. She was buried in a honorary grave of that city at the Hauptfriedhof.
