August Gal was an olive oil merchant. He became a member of the city council of Nice in 1855. In 1860 he spoke against the autonomistes, who were opposed to Nice becoming part of France. His heirs donated his lands to the city of Nice on the condition that a street would be named after him. There is indeed a Rue Auguste Gal in Nice. |
