Pierre Desor studied palaeontology and glacial phenomena. In 1841 he ascended the Jungfrau together with James David Forbes and in 1842 he joined the ascent of the Lauteraarhorn. Both mountains are part of the Bernese Alps.

Desor was appointed professor of geology at the academy of Neuchâtel, where he studied the structure of glaciers. He also did research in the Sahara. After receiving a large inheritance he retired to Combe Varin in Val-de-Travers.

Among his published works were "Synopsis de échinides fossiles" (1858) and "Aus Sahara" (1865).
