Miklós Ybl studied at the Politechnikum in Vienna. He worked as an assistant to Mihály Pollack (1773-1855) and from 1836 to 1840 he worked in th office of Henrik Koch. After this he went to Munich and Italy to study.

He was the architect of renaissance buildings in Budapest like the Opera House, the Custom House and the Basilique of St. Stephan. He was also responsible for enlargements to the Castle of Buda. His statue can be found in Budapest at the square that was named after him.
