Had John Ruskin as a pupil and together they sketched in Italy in 1845. In "The Principles and Practices of Art" he pleaded for accuracy but noted the impossibility of imitating real objects in art. In later years Ruskin criticized him for observing not carefully enough. Ruskin admitted to his parents that he wrote things about Harding that he dared not say openly to his face.
