Madeleine Chapelle was the sixth and youngest child of cabinetmaker Joseph Mathieu Lambert Chapelle. Her mother was Jeanne Chapelle, born Nicaise. Her sister Sophie married the musician Pierre Antoine Dubreuil and lived with him in Guéret. When their second child was born, Madeline joined them to look after the children. Later she had her own linen shop. Her cousin Adele introduced her to the painter Jean Auguste Domique Ingres. On 7 August 1813 he wrote her a letter in which he described himself. After a brief further correspondence he proposed to her without having met her. She went to Rome in September where they first met at the tomb of Nero. On 4 December 1813 they married in the church of San Martino ai Monti in Rome. Their only child was stillborn, but the marriage was happy and Madeleine often modelled for him. In May 1849 she fell ill and she died on 27 July 1849. Ingres was devastated by her death. She was buried at Père Lachaise in Paris.
