Sarah Lane was the daughter of William Borrow (1799-1872), who held a managerial position at the New Brittania Theatre in Hoxton, London. When she was was seventeen she had started singing and dancing under the name of Miss Sarah Wilton. In 1849 the theatre's manager Samuel Haycroft Lane (1803-1871) married her and thus she became Sarah Lane. He had been a widower since 1843 and her name had been billed as Mrs S. Lane for several years ahead of the marriage. She managed the theatre together with her husband and after he died in 1871 she took sole responsibility until her own death in 1899. Between 1873 and 1881 she translated several melodramas from the French and staged them at the theatre. Her last stage appearance took place during the Christmas show in 1898 and she was 76 years old at the time. When she died in 1899 she left a fortune of 250,000 pounds. Her funeral procession from the theatre to Kensal Green was attended by large crowds. Related persons cooperated with St Casse, Clara |
