Lee Strasberg is known as 'the father of method acting'. He was born in the Austrian Empire and in 1909 he emigrated with his family to New York. He worked as a shipping clerk and bookkeeper but at the same time he tried to become an actor. In 1925 he appeared in the theatre Guild's play "Processional". In 1926 he married Nora Krecaun, but she died in 1929. He helped to create the "Group Theater" in New York and there he developed his method acting. In 1934 actress Paula Miller became his second wife. This marriage lasted until her death in 1966 from cancer. In 1967 he married his third wife, actress Anna Mizrahi. In 1951 Strassberg became artistic director of the Actors Studio and in 1969 he founded the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. In 1974 he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for "The Godfather, Part II". Among his students over the years were Anne Bancroft, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Jane Fonda and Robert DeNiro. Marilyn Monroe left 75% of her estate to him in her will.
