Son of a coffee house owner. He performed at his father's place and in 1918 he started playing children's parts at the Burgtheater in Vienna. He was educated at the Akademie für darstellende Kunst by Alexander Moissi. From 1924 to 1928 he was engaged as a pupil at the Volkstheater.

From 1928 to 1929 he worked as an actor in Sankt Pölten, from 1929 to 1931 in Aussig, from 1931 to 1933 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg and from 1933 to 1934 at the Staatstheater in München. In 1934 he appeared for the first time in a movie, "Liebe, Tod und Teufel".

From 1934 until 1945 he worked under Heinz Hilpert at the Deutschen Theater in Berlin. From 1938 onwards he was also engaged at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. After the war he worked for the Burgtheater, where he was a honourary member. In 1955 he portrayed Adolf Hitler in the movie "Der letzte Akt". His recital evenings in Vienna were famous.
