Wilhelm von Kobell was the son of the landscape painter Ferdinand Kobell. He was taught by his father and his uncle Franz Kobell and studied in Mannheim under F.A. von Leydendorf (1721-1795). He helped his father with several landscapes and after elector Charles Theodore bought two of his paintings he moved to Munich. Apart from landscapes he became known for his paintings of battles and horses. In 1808 he became a professor at the Academy in Munich.
