Lucien Guitry was the son of the rich shopkeeper Edmond Guitry. He entered the Conservatory in Paris in 1876 and debuted at the Théâtre du Gymnase in 1878. In 1882 he married Renée Delmas de Pont-Jest (1858-1902) in London. Sarah Bernhardt was a witness at the marriage. In 1885 he worked for the French Theater of St. Petersburg where he performed in several winter seasons. In St. Petersburg his son Sacha Guitry was born. In Paris, also in 1885, he separated from his wife because of his affairs and they were divorced in 1889.

In 1897 he was successful at the Renaissance theatre in Paris. In 1900 he was engaged at the Porte Saint-Martin theatre and in 1901 at the Variétés. He resigned his membership from the Comédie-Française in order to become director of the Renaissance theatre. There he collaborated with Marthe Brandès. His portrait was painted by Oswald Birley in 1922 and he died in Paris in 1925.
