Daughter of Archduke Joseph Anton Johann von Österreich and his third wife Maria Dorothea von Württemberg. Her father was a son of the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II.

In 1847 she married Ferdinand Karl von Österreich-Este, duke of Modena. He died soon after their daughter Marie Therese was born. Pushed by Archduchess Sophia, she married Karl Ferdinand von Österreich (1818-1874) in 1854. It was a good marriage and they had four surviving children. Their daughter Maria Theresia would become queen of Bavaria and Maria Christina would be queen of Spain.

Karl Ferdinand died in 1874 and was buried at the Kapuzinergruft in Vienna. Elisabeth lived until 1903 and died in Vienna. She was buried at the Helenenfriedhof in Baden near Vienna.
