Marie Thérèse was the daughter and first child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. She was the only of their children to survive the French Revolution. She grew up at the court in Versailles. In 1789 the revolution broke out and she was brough from Versailles to Paris with her parents. In 1792 the royal family was imprisoned. She was fourteen years old when her father was executed on 21 January 1793. Her other followed on 16 October 1793. Marie Thérèse remained imprisoned in the Temple and after the fall of Robespierre her conditions in prison improved. After long negotiations she was exchanged for French prisoners and on 19 December 1795 she left the temple. She was taken to Basel where she was handed over to the Austrians. She integrated well into her Austrian family and in 1799 she married Louis Antoine d'Artois, Duke of Angoulême and son of the future Charles X. She was known as Madame Royal and her uncle Louis XVIII presented her as a martyr of the revolution. After Napoleon's fall in 1814 Louis XIII became king, but Marie Thérèse was far more popular. She was in Bordeaux when Napoleon returned to France and she addressed the soldiers and the people, attempting to reassure them. In April 1815 she took a ship to England, where she continued her activities. Napoleon stated that she was 'the only man in the family' and she was much respected by the royalists. After the Second Restoration she supported the ultra-royalists, and she considered Louis XVIII too conciliatory. In 1824 her father-in-law Charles X became king. In 1830 he was forced to abdicate, and they family left for England. In 1832 they moved to Prague Castle and in 1836 to Nova Gorica in Italy, where they lived in the Coronini-Cronberg Palace. In 1843 the Duc de Blacas purchased Frohsdorf Castle in Lanzenkirchen near Vienna for the former royal family. In 1844 her husband died in Nova Gorica and in 1851 Marie Thérèse died at Frohsdorf Castle. In France president Louis Napoleon Bonaparte attended a funeral service in her honor. Like her husband and her father-in-law, she was buried in the crypt of the Franziscan Monastery in Nova Gorica.
