Auguste von Bayern was the daughter of the future king Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (1756-1825). Her mother was his first wife Augusta Wilhelmina von Hessen-Darmstadt (1765-1796). She was engaged to Karl Ludwig Friedrich von Baden (1786-1818) when Napoleon offered her father the kingship on the condition that Auguste would marry his stepson Eugène de Beauharnais. This was accepted and her father became king on 1 January 1806. Auguste tried to delay the marriage, but the marriage agreement was signed on 13 January and on 14 January she married Eugène in Munich in attendance of Napoleon. They had six surviving children and witnesses described their union as a happy one. On 20 March 1811 Napoleon's son by Marie Louise was born and Eugène was no longer heir to Napoleon's throne. After Napoleon's defeat he left Italy and settled in Munich with Auguste and they received the title of Duke and Duchess of Leuchtenberg. After Eugène's death in 1824 Auguste lived at Palais Leuchtenberg at the Odeonsplatz in Munich and at Schloss Ismaning not far from Munich. She died in 1851 in Munich.
