Melanie Appleby was the daughter of a Jamaican father and a white British mother. She worked as a model before she and her sister Kim formed the band Mel and Kim. They were very successful and reached number one in the UK with their single "Respectable" in 1987. Other hits were "Showing Out" (1986), "F.L.M." (1987) and "That's he Way It Is" (1988). In 1988 Mel was diagnosed with cancer and work on their second album was stopped. In 1990 she died of pneumonia after her immune system was weakened by chemotherapy. Mel was buried at the East Finchley Cemetery in London. Kim started a solo career but wasn't very successful without her sister. |
