Alexander Black was born around 1797 and probably trained as a carpenter before he became an architect. For most of his working life he was Superintendent of Works at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh. In 1833 he took over as its architect from Thomas Bonnar (d,1847) when Bonnar retired. He designed several school buildings in Edinburgh and created a masterplan for the area between Leith Walk and Easter Road in 1848. Later in his life he lived at 19 Lauriston Street in Tollcross, Edinburgh.
