W.G. van der Hulst was educated as a school teacher. He taught in Utrecht from 1901 onwards and from 1913 until 1940 he was the director of the school. In 1907 he married Johanna Cornelia van Arkel. His wife died after the birth of their seond child in 1913. In 1916 he married Jeanette Maan (1892-1982) and with her he had four further children. His first book "Willem Wijcherts" was published in 1907 under the pseudonym Jan van de Croese. His novel "Jaap Holm en z'n vrinden" (1910) made him well known with the public. His own favourite, "Peerke en z'n kameraden" was published in 1919. Between 1936 and 1948 he published "In de Soete Suikerbol" (7 volumes). From 1933 onwards several of his books were illustrated by his son Willem junior (1917-2006). His son Hendrik van de Hulst (1918-2000) was a well known astronomer. |
