Daniel Liszt was the only son of Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult. He looked a lot like his father and he showed promise during his studies. he discussed his future profession with his father and they agreed that he would study law in Vienna under the protection of Edouard Liszt, who was assistant imperial prosecuter. He moved to Vienna in 1857. Soon after his arrival his father's teacher Cerny died and he represented his father during the funeral.

But he suffered from tuberculosis and he was forced to return to Berlin. His condition was so bad that Franz Liszt hurried to Berlin. He arrived there on 11 December 1859 and Daniel died two days later, aged 20. His grave at the St. Hedwig cemetery was demolished when the Berlin Wall was built, but his monument can still be found at the wall of the cemetery.
