Nephew of the famous actor Ludwig Devrient. In 1815 he fought against Napoleon at Waterloo and afterwards he worked as a merchant in Berlin and Zwickau.

In 1819 he made his stage debut in Braunschweig. He obtained an engagement in Dresden where he married the opera singer Wilhelmine Schröder in 1823. He had met the 18 year old daughter of the actress Sophie Schröder in 1822 and had fallen in love with her immediately. They were were divorced in 1829, but until 1834 they still worked together.

In 1835 he went to Karlsruhe and in 1839 to Hanover where he worked for 33 years at the Court Theatre. He specialized in heroic roles.

On 17 Sep 1869 he celebrated his golden jubilee as an actor. His brothers Eduard and Emil as well as his son Friedrich were also actors.
