Magda Schneider took singing lessons at the conservatory in Augsburg and also trained as a ballet dancer. She started as an actress at the theatre in Ingolstadt and in 1930 Ernst Maruschka took her to the Theater an der Wien. In 1931 she made her first movie, "Zwei in Einem Auto". In 1933 she met the actor Wolf Albach-Retty. They married in Berlin-Charlottenburg and they made eight movies together. In 1938 their daughter Rosemarie was born. She would become world famous as Romy Schneider. In 1940 they had a son, Wolf Dieter.

It has been written that she was close to Hitler and indeed she visited him at his Berghof in 1941 at the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. But it seems she had refused six invitations and was told that she wasn't allowed to refuse another invitation. However, Hitler had been an admirer of her since the early 1930s and she and her husband were both stars during the nazi era.

After the Second World War the marriage failed and she moved to Mariengrund in Berchtesgaden, where she lived for the rest of her life. In 1953 she married the restaurateur Hans Herbert Blatzheim (1905-1968). In 1982 she married camera man Horst Fehlhaber (b.1919) and she was with him until her death.

Magda Schneider is best remembered for the parts in the Sissi movies where she played the mother of her real daughter Romy, who was Sissi.
