Wolf Albach-Retty was the son of the actress Rosa Albach-Retty
and Karl Albach, an officer in the Austrian army. He was educated
at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts and when he was
twenty years old he played his first part at the Burgtheater
in Vienna. In 1927 he debuted in a silent movie. In May 1933 he joined the SS and during the nazi era he had parts in love stories and musical movies. In 1936 he married Magda Schneider and he became a German citizen. Their daughter Romy was born in 1938 and their son Wolf-Dieter in 1941. Together with Magda he appeared in seven movies. In 1942 he had joined the NSDAP and after the war he was no longer the star he used to be and he had to settle for minor parts. He returned to the Burgtheater in 1949, where he played in "Anatol" by Arthur Schnitzler. In 1949 he divorced Magda Schneider. They had seperated in 1943 and Albach-Retty had lived with the actress Trude Marlen, who became his second wife.
