Franz Xaverius Ries was a child prodigy at the violin. He entered the Court Orchestra in Bonn when he was only eleven years old. Later he became it's concert master and then it's leader.

In Bonn he lived opposite to the house where Ludwig von Beethoven was born and he taught the young Ludwig the violin. Johanna Kinkel was also one of his pupils. His sons Ferdinand and Hubert Ries were musicians as well.
