Frieda Hempel studied in Berlin and Leipzig. She debuted in 1905 and from 1907 onwards she was engaged at the Royal Opera in Berlin. In 1912 she debuted at the Metropolitan, where she sang under Toscanini. In London she was very successful at Drury Lane in 1914, working with Beecham. In 1919 she left the Metropolitan.

In 1921 she performed with the Chicago Company in San Franciso before retiring from the opera. She continued her career as a concert singer, at a certain time adopting programs of nineteenth century singer Jenny Lind. In later years her voice became less powerful. Her last public performances took place in 1951.
