Maximiliane von Arnim, known as Maxe, was a daughter of the poets Achim and Bettina von Arnim. She grew up at Wiepersdorf Castle in Bqandenburg and in Berlin. During the 1840s she was close to the court of king Friedrich Wilhelm IV and a friend of prince Waldemar von Preussen.

In 1853 she married the officer Eduard von Oriola (1809-1862) and she lived with him in Bonn until 1856. In 1856 he was transferred to Frankfurt an der Oder and Berlin became their home. From 1859 to 1860 they lived in Koblenz and in 1860 they moved to Breslau. Her husband died there in 1862 and in 1866 she returned to Berlin where she lived until her death.

Her house had been open to visitors on their different stations and her salon on Fridays in Berlin was well known. Among her many famous visitors were Marie von Bunsen, Hermann Grimm, Paul Meyerheim and Clara Schumann.
