Joseph Wieniawsky studied music and harmony in Paris. In 1850 he returned to Russia. From 1851 until 1853 he toured with his older brother, the violonist Henry Wieniawsky. In 1856 he went to Weimar to study music under Franz Liszt.

In 1866 he settled in Moscow, where he became a professor at the Conservatory and later had his own private school. After Moscow he lived in Warsaw, where he often performend in concerts.
