Elizabeth Twining was born into a family of tea merchants. Her father was Richard Twiing FRS (1772-1857). She grew up in London and she learned art and drawing. She visited numerous museums and started drawing plans and flowers. She wrote and illustrated several books, including "Illustrations of the Natural Order of Plants" (2 volumes in 1849 and 1855). She was also an active philanthropist and she managed a temperance hall in Portugal Street in Holborn, London. She lived at Dial House in Twickenham. She died in 1899 and in her will she left Dial House to the people of Twickenham as a vicarage. Most of her artwork is in the collection of the British Museum. |
