From 1910, Joseph Bonvoisin studied the engraving on weapons. He continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège. After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he entered the army as a volunteer. But he suffered from bad health, and he was soon discharged. He left for England where he studied at the Birmingham School of Art from 1914 to 1917. Then he moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1917 to 1919.

After his return to Liège, he returned to the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège, where Berchmans, Maréchal and De Witte were his teachers. From 1931 to 1960 he was a professor of drawing at this academy. From 1940 he concentrated on painting. He created a large altarpiece for the chapel of the Ambachtschool in Bree in 1942. In 1947 he travelled to Italy to paint landscapes. After two years of work, in 1956 he completed a mural for the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Chèvremont. He died in 1960 in La-Roche-en-Ardenne and he was buried in his native Liège.
