Auguste Castermans was the son of the carpenter Paul Castermans and his wife Catherine, born Saive. He studied architecture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Liège from 1843. Julien Étienne Rémont, the city architect, was his teacher. He mosly designed residential buildings, but he also created churches and funerary monuments. Between 1852 and 1869 he created the album "Parallèle des maisons de Bruxelles et des principales villes de la Belgique, construites depuis 1830 jusqu’à nos jours, représentées en plans, élévations, coupes & détails intérieurs et extérieurs" in two volumes. In 1876 the St. Servatius Church in Nerem was constructed based on his design. After a long illness he died in Liège in 1891. |
