Ernst Büchner was the son of the surgeon Jakob Büchner (1753-1835) from Reinheim, Hessen. He was educated in the Netherlands. He worked as a surgeon in the French army during the campaign in Russia. From Paris he returned to Germany and from 1812 he worked as a district doctor in Goddelau, Hessen. He was appointed court doctor and senior medical officer in the Grand Duchy of Hessen. He was the author of several medical essays. During his work as a surgeon at the Philippshospital for psychiatric patients he met Caroline Louise Reuss (1791-1858). He married her on 28 October 1812 and their five surviving children all gained professional recognition. George Büchner (1813-1837) was a successful writer and Louise Büchner (1821-1877) was a well known women's rights activist. Family Daughter: Büchner, Luise |
