Gertrude Martineau was the daughter of the unitarian minister James Martineau. Harriet Martineau was her aunt. Together with her younger sister Edith she was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite group of painters. Getrude painted animals, flowers and genre scenes. From 1873 to 1884 she was the director of the Art School at Bedford College and this made her one of the earliest female professors. In 1907 she laid the foundation stone for the Martineau Memorial Hall in Norwich. She died at her home in London in 1924 and was buried in the grave of her father at Highgate Cemetery in London.
