Amelia Smith was the daughter of the scenic artist and carpenter Richard Smith and his wife Alice, born Robinson. She used the stage name Amelia Newton. She had smaller parts at the Royal Strand Theatre and the Vaudeville Theatre in London. In 1871 she appeared with Nelly Power at the Vaudeville in "The Orange Tree and the Humble Bee; or, The Little Princess who was Lost at Sea". In "Two Roses" she appeared with Henry Irving. She appeared at the Strand with the actor Thomas Thorne and after she married him in 1867, she was also known as Milly Thorne. The marriage was not happy, but on 19 October 1872 they had a daughter, Millie Hammond Thorne. George Tyrell Thorne was her brother-in-law. Amelia died in 1884 in Monte Carlo. |
