Franz Joseph Fröhlich worked for the Hofkapelle in Würzburg from 1797. In that year, the founded the Collegium Musicum Academicum Wirceburgense was founded, which became the Würzburg Music Academy in later years. He managed it from 1801 and became its director after it affiliated with the university in 1803. He was involved with it for 60 years and during that time its number of students increased from 20 to 600 per year. He was a private lecturer at the University of Würzburg from 1804 and was appointed extraordinary professor of music and aesthetics in 1811. In 1815 he started giving lectures on art history. In 1819 he became Professor of Pedagogics and Didactics and in 1821 he became a full professor. He collection a selection of pictures for the university and that became the nucleus of the Martin von Wagner Museum in the university. In 1838 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty. He retired in 1858 at the age of 78. He died in Würzburg in 1862 and was buried in an honorary grave of the city at the Hauptfriedhof. |
