William James Chrystal was born in Glasgow as the son of the insurance broker Robert Chrystal. His grandfather Dr. William Chrystal (1776-1830) was rector of Glasgow Grammer School. His mother Jean was a daughter of the founder of J & J White Chemicals. Chrystal was educated at the Glasgow Academy and at Glasgow University. He worked in a laboratory until he joined J & J White Chemicals as a chemist. Afther the death of his uncle John White in 1881 he became a partner in the business. He improved manufacturing processes and the company grew until it employed over 500 men. He bought Auchendennan House in Arden on Lock Lomond and reconstructed it thoroughly. Chrystal was a member of the Glasgow Philosophical Society and a member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. |
