David Prince Miller performed from 1825 as an illusionist in small venues in England and southern Scotland. In 1838 he came to Glasgow where he created a show during the Glasgow Fair. He continued with a travelling show that visited many cities in Scotland. From his earnings he built the Sans Pareil Theatre in Glasgow with a capacity of 1,200 people. He also built the Adelphi Theatre that held 2,500 people and was located on the Green in Glasgow, opposite the jail. In 1848 he sold the Adelphi to James Calvert, but it burned down soon after the sale. He returned to touring and in in 1855 he performed a play about his own life, "The Ups and Downs of Life". He published "The Life of a Showman" in 1853. He opened further Adelphi Theatres in Coatbridge and Dumbarton. Later he was the manager of the Prince's Mall Theatre in London. He died in 1873 and he was buried in the Glasgow Necropolis. |
