James Figgins was the son of the typefounder Joseph Figgins. In 1836 he married Louisa Beckwidth. He entered the business of his father, but he was best known for his political career. He was a justice of the peace for Middlexdex and he was Sheriff of London and Middlesex from 1856 to 1866. From 1868 to 1874 he was a member of the House of Commons for Shrewsbury.
