Jacobus Cornet showed an early interest in painting and he took lessons when he was twelve years old. When he was seventeen years old he was taught by David Pierre Giottino Humbert de Superville at the artists association Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden. He created historical works, landscapes, city views and portraits. His work was popular and is now in the collection of Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden.

Cornet became a teacher at Ars Aemula Natura and in 1849 he became its director. Later he became the director of the Prentenkabinet in Leiden as well. He never married. In 1882 he suffered a stroke and he died later that year in Leiden.
