George Robert Broad was a brass and bronze founder and a gold and silver carver. He was the son of the bricklayer John Broad. George was the owner of the foundry in Hammersmith, London. He had set up his company in the 1870s and it casted the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain (often called the Eros Fountain) at Piccadilly Circus in London. It was designed by Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934) and unveiled on 29 June 1893. He married Caroline Garrad (1840-1904). In 1881 he lived at Belgrave Villa, Hammersmith. After his death, his son George Frederick John (b.1864) continued George Broad and Son. His grave monument at Margravine Cemetery was casted by himself and designed by Aristide Fabbruci (d.1903). |
