Stephan von Sarter was the son of the innkeeper Johann Gottfried Sarter (1788-1862) from Bonn. In 1834 his father had to give up his inn "Zum Helm" and the family moved to relatives in Cologne. He was trained at the bank Leopold Seligmann, that transferred him to their branch in Paris. In 1862 he started speculating for himself and he made a fortune with the trading of shares in the Suez Canal Company, that was founded by his businesss friend Ferdinand de Lesseps. After a large donation George II of Meiningen made him a baron in 1881. Between 1882 and 1884 he had the Drachenburg Castle built at Königswinter near Bonn. It cost him 1,7 million marks. He wanted to live in it with a sweetheart from his youth, but she died before the building was completed. He decided to remain in Paris and he became a French citizen in 1890. Sometimes he used Drachenfels Castle to receive guests. He died in 1902 in his rented apartment in Paris. One year later his remains were transferred to Köningswinter, not far from the Drachenfels.
