Florence Baldwin was the daughter of admiral Charles H. Baldwin (1822-1888) and his wife Caroline Permelia, born Tolfree (1835-1873). Folorence was a natural blonde and she was regarded as one of the most beautiful young women of America. In 1877 she met Edward Decon during a Newport house party. They married on 29 April 1879 in New York. They had four daughters, including Gladys Marie Deacon, the future Duchess of Marlborough. They also had one son, who died in infancy. After Deacon discovered that she had a lover, he followed them through France until he found them in bed at the Hotel Splendide in Cannes. He shot the lover, Émille Abbeille from Paris. Abbeille died the next day. Deacon was sentenced to twelve months of imprisonment in May 1892 for manslaughter. After a pardon for many prisoners by president Carnot he was released after a few months. They divorced in 1893 and afterwards she used the name Baldwin. She spent much of her life in Rome and in the early 1900e she lived with her daughters at the Villa Caprarola (also known as the Villa Farnese) in Viterbo.
