Edward Caird was the son of John Caird, a partner in the engineering firm of Caird & Co. His older brother John Caird (1820-1898) was a theologian. Edwards's father died when he was still young and he was mainly brought up in Greenock by his aunt Jane Caird. He studied at the University of Glasgow before he was awarded a scholarship and he continued his studies in Oxford from 1860. He finished his tudies at Bailliol College in 1863 with a gold medal and became a tutor at MErton College in 1864. In 1866 he returned to Glasgow to become Professor of Morap Philosophy. He married Caroline Frances Wilie (b.1831) on 8 May 1867. In Glasgow the philosopher John Watson (1847-1939) was one of his pupils. In 1877 he published "A Critical Account of the Philosophy of Kant, with an Historical Introduction" and further publications followed.

In 1893 he returned to Oxford after he was elected master of Bailliol College. He lectured at Toynbee Hall as well. He was known as a liberal thinker in Oxford. As a result of health problems he was forced to resign in 1907. He died in the same year in 1909 in Oxford. He was buried in St Michael Section of St. Sepulchre’s Cemetery, near T.H. Green and Benjamin Jowett, both colleagues from Baillol.
