Franz Xaver Schwanthaler was a son of Johann Peter Schwanthaler (1762-1838). After he was educated in his father's workshop he worked for his uncle Franz Jakob Schwanthaler (1760-1820) in Munich. After his uncle died he supported his cousin Ludwig Schwanthaler (1802-1848) in the management of the large workshop. He created figures for the rooms of the Residenz in Munich and models for ornaments for the Court Theatre. For the Walhalla in Donaustauf he created busts of the emperors Friedrich I and Karl V and of Mozart.

After his cousin died in 1848, King Ludwig I commissioned him with a grave monument at the Alte Südfriedhof in Munich. After his own death in 1854 he was buried there as well.
