Robert Vollmoeller was a son of the merchant Rudolf Vollmoeller (1818-1868). He learned his profession in the company of his parents and worked for trading companies in Heilbronn, Stuttgart and Freiburg im Breusgau. In 1871 he took over the family business and in 1873 he married Emilie Beer (1852-1914), who came from a family of merchants in Balingen.

In order to expand his business he relocated to Stuttgart where he started a textile wholesale business. Together with Karl Behr he bought Theodor Maier's jersey factory and they renovated and expanded it. It grew rapidly and new branches were opened. In 1888 Vollmoeller continued the business alone and in 1910 he was the larges jersey manufacturer in the world and he employed 3,000 people. In the spring of 1911 he suffered several strokes and he died in October of that year.

The painter Mathilde Vollmoeller-Purrmann (1876-1943) was his daughter and the author Karl Gustav Vollmoeller (1878-1948) was his son.
