John Bartholomew was the son of the engraver George Bartholomew (1784-1871). He was a master copper plate engraver and engraved street maps for several firms in Edinburgh. In 1826 he founded John Bartholomew and Son Ltd. His company was much respected as a cartographic institution, but he was shy man who didn't like to appear in public life. He married Magaret McGregor in 1829 and in 1859 their son John (1831-1893) succeeded him in the business.

He died in 1861 and was buried a Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh. His son John was buried in the same grave after his death in 1893.
