George Bishop started working in a wine-making business in London when he was eighteen years old. He became its owner and was very successful. He used the money he had made to start a scientific career. He was admitted to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1830 and Augustus de Morgan gave him lessons in algebra. In 1836 he erected an astronomical observatory near South Villa, his home at Regent's Park in London.

From 1833 to 1839 and from 1840 to 1857 he was treasurer of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1857 and 1858 he was elected as its president, but his health prevented him from presiding. In 1848 he had become a fellow of the Royal Society. After a long illness he died in June 1861. The observatory was closed after his death but the instruments were moved to Twickenham where a new observatory was constructed. This existed until 1877.
