Richard Valpy was the eldest son of Richard Valpy. He was educated in Normandy and Southampton before he entered Pembroke College in Oxford. In 1777 he took orders and he became second master of Bury St. Edmunds school. In 1781 he became head master of Reading Grammar School, a position he would hold for almost 50 years. From 1787 was also rector of Stradishall, Suffolk. In 1788 he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

His Latin and Greek grammars were circulated widely and the school flourished under his direction. However, it was declining by the time his youngest son Francis (1797-1882) succeeded him as headmaster in 1830. Other sons were the publisher Abraham John Valpy (1786-1854) and William Henry Valpy (1793-1853), who settled in New Zealand. Richard Valpy died in London in 1836. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
