Alfredo Trombetti came from a modest family. He graduated in Literature in Bologna in 1891 and he became a teacher at a highschool. In 1902 he published the essay "Nessi genealogici tra le lingue del mondo antico" and it earned him the Royal Prize of the Accademia dei Lincei.

In 1923 he was the first to study the similarities of the Basque language with the Caucasian languages. He was also known for his theory that all languages were derived from one spoken language in prehistory. He suddenly died in 1929 when he was taking a sea bath.
